A BATANGAS 1,200-megawatt (MW) power plant operated by KEPCO Philippines Corp. underwent scheduled maintenance on Friday, with the shutdown lasting until Saturday, the Energy department said in a statement.
"[T]his weekend, July 12-13, the 1,200-MW Ilijan combined-cycle power plant in Batangas will be on a scheduled plant maintenance to inspect the current state of its pipelines, known as the "pigging" process," the department said.
The procedure, the agency noted, aims to get rid of accumulated deposits that may affect the overall productivity of the facility. It will involve cleaning the nearly 15-kilometer pipeline, which originates from the Malampaya platform.
Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho L. Petilla said the maintenance could no longer be rescheduled. "We have the equipment ready, so might as well do it as scheduled... We can’t risk resetting the pigging as there are other power plants that are scheduled for maintenance. Doing so might just aggravate our current energy situation," he was quoted in the statement as saying.
Asked if the shutdown would entail brownouts, Mr. Petilla said via text: "There is a possible rotating one-hour brownout from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow [today], affecting about 3% of total households at any given time in that interval."
"However, if Calaca plant comes online from outage before 10 a.m., we won’t have any brownout," he noted. -- Daryll Edisonn D. Saclag source
