ENERGY Development Corp. is set to repair cooling towers at the Bacon-Manito (Bacman) geothermal power plant in Bicol after they sustained damage from typhoon Glenda (international name Rammasun).
The Lopez-controlled company said in a disclosure on Thursday that Bacman 1 and 2, with 55-megawatt (MW) capacity each, "will require some repair before their return to service."
"The company would, however, like to stress the availability of strategic spares that have been ordered precisely for this type of contingency," EDC said.
The power firm also noted that the power plant’s steam pipes appear to have sustained no serious damage.
"All power plant buildings are largely intact. The turbines and generators are unaffected," it added.
EDC also commenced clearing operations on roads in and around the Bacman plant site.
It said 21 out of 25 landslides have already been cleared, with the remaining four expected to be cleared on Thursday.
"Based on available information, there has been no reported fatality within the Bacman concession area," EDC added.
The Bacman power facility -- which straddles Bacon, Sorsogon and Manito, Albay -- consists of two 55-MW plants and a third 20-MW unit.
The third unit went into a one-month scheduled shutdown on July 7 for for maintenance and turbine replacement. -- Claire-Ann Marie C. Feliciano source
