The Department of Energy (DOE) on Thursday said full restoration of electricity in areas affected by typhoon “Glenda” will take two weeks.
In a televised press conference over at ANC, DOE Secretary Jericho Petilla said this is just an estimate until the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) finishes its assessment of the extent of damage the typhoon wrought in Luzon.
“At the earliest, (the power will be restored on) July 19. At the latest, July 22 about 10-50 percent,” Petilla said.
Petilla said the damaged caused by tropical storm “Glenda” is not as extensive as super typhoon “Yolanda.”
Meanwhile, Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) Spokesman Joe Zaldarriaga said 1.8 million Luzon customers still have no power.
Zaldarriaga said there are several factors to consider regarding power restoration such as the cleaning of debris first before they could make repairs.
Zaldarriaga said the percentage of Meralco franchises that still has no power are: Batangas (94%), Bulacan (11%), Cavite (67%), Laguna (61%), Metro Manila (18%), Quezon (99%) and Rizal (47%).
Zaldarriaga said the estimated full restoration of electricity in Metro Manila is by 10 a.m. on Friday.
On Wednesday, Glenda slammed Luzon including Metro Manila that caused major power outages. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that the death toll has risen to 38 so far. (Mary Rose A. Hogaza) source
