EDC admits Malitbog geothermal power facility tripped last week

by Lenie Lectura - August 22, 2016

LOPEZ-LED Energy Development Corp. (EDC) said on Monday its 77-megawatt (MW) Malitbog Unit 2 geothermal power plant tripped last week.
The power facility, the EDC said, “experienced a flashover inside the high-voltage terminal box,” causing the unit to trip at around 5 p.m. on August 17. The EDC said at the time of the incident, Malitbog Unit 2 was offline and in the process of testing and commissioning its automatic voltage regulator (AVR) under the supervision of ABB, the manufacturer of the AVR. It was part of a 30-day scheduled maintenance outage.
“The incident did not have any impact on the grid as Malitbog Unit 2 was not synchronized to the grid at that time, and no injuries were sustained by any of the personnel involved,” the company said.
The EDC, ABB and other consultants are currently conducting an assessment of the extent of the repairs needed and a full review to determine all contributing factors that led to the plant incident. “The EDC does have machinery breakdown and business interruption insurance in place intended to respond in the case of such incidents, and its insurers and their advisers have been informed about the incident,” the company said.
It added it will provide material developments once initial investigations are completed.
The Malitbog power plant is part of the Unified Leyte geothermal power plants.
