Capacity for major power grid Luzon
will get a boost of 847 megawatts this year courtesy of several new power
projects coming on stream, according to Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi.
These shall be provided by the
capacities of the 97MW Avion and 414MW San Gabriel gas plants; and the 82MW
Anda coal plant plus renewable energy facilities. The unit 2 of the South Luzon
Thermal Energy Corporation (SLTEC) coal-fired plant of 135MW capacity also
reached its full commercial operations this year.
Cusi said the bulk at 500MW will be
provided by the greenfield gas plants of First Gen and will be reinforced by
coal capacity of 232MW.
Capacity boost is also anticipated
from greenfield solar projects of 50 to 98MW in capacity while biomass will add
up around 20MW this year.
Had not been for the continuing
scheduled maintenance of power plants, Cusi noted that power system in Luzon
will likely tread on more stable grounds in the coming months.
The only conditions wobbling
electricity supply in the country, primarily for Luzon grid, are ‘forced
outages’ of power plants that at times cannot be avoided because the generating
facilities are not just aging fleets but they have been run to the ground
during this year’s election period.
“Based on the presentation, that is
the San Gabriel, the Avion and the other one is the Anda coal. So that is a
total of 632MW. Within this month, I think we have 500MW coming in,” Cusi said
on the expected capacity additions this year.
