HEDCOR Inc., a
subsidiary of Aboitiz Power Corp., is expanding its hydropower plant in Benguet
to 19 megawatts (MW).
Hedcor’s Bineng
combined hydroelectric-power project is composed of Bineng 1, Bineng 2 and
Bineng 2b. The expansion from the current 5.48 MW to 19 MW is expected to
generate an additional of 42.7 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) or 62 million
kWh annually.
The expansion project
is expected to be online by 2018.
The company is
currently processing its Free Prior Informed Consent with the National
Commission on Indigenous Peoples and various stakeholders.
The
Bineng hydrofacility was constructed in 1991, one of the first plants to be
constructed by Hedcor in Benguet. The facility harnesses the water of Balili
River, which flows northward from Baguio City to La Trinidad.
The Bineng hydroelectric
plant holds International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
certifications. These standards are for Quality Management, Environmental
Management, Information Security and Occupational Health and Safety.
In the facility’s 25
years of operation, Barangay Bineng and the municipality of La Trinidad have
been partners with Hedcor.
AboitizPower is the
