Guimaras keen on renewable energy

ILOILO CITY – The island province of Guimaras is looking to have more renewable energy projects.
RENEWABLE ENERGY FOR OTHERS—In this April 2017 photo, wind turbines serve as backdrop for a salt farm in San Lorenzo town, Guimaras province. While the wind turbines have been one of the island province’s newest attractions, local residents are not directly benefiting from this renewable energy project of PHINMA Energy Corp. “Guimaras is standing as an agri–eco tourism capital in Region 6. For more than 13 years, we made ourselves admirable. We want to reach the vision of the province”, said Guimaras Governor Samuel Gumarin.
Speaking at a recent business forum, Guimaras Governor Samuel Gumarin told the Guimaras Investors Club (GIC) and PHINMA Energy Corporation that the island province is looking to acquire more power sources to stabilize its need.
“I think all feel that it is needed in both commercial and residential areas,” Gumarin said.
The province with five towns—Buenavista, Jordan, Nueva Valencia, San Lorenzo and Sibunag – has been experiencing unstable power supply for the past several years.
This is despite the fact that Guimaras is home to the 54-megawatt wind farm of PHINMA Energy’s subsidiary Trans-Asia Renewable Energy Corp. (TAREC).
The wind turbines actually generate power that is sold to the grid.
Guimaras Electric Cooperative (Guimelco), the sole power distributor, gets its supply from power producers in Iloilo and Negros.
Nevertheless, Gumarin still welcomes the pitch of PHINMA Energy for a solar energy farm.
Guimaras is hoping that it could directly benefit from future renewable energy projects.
