The House Committee on
Energy is counting on the Masbate Electric Cooperative (MASELCO) to settle its
P240 million obligation, which resulted in the disconnection of the power
supply in Masbate.
The panel decided to
monitor the discussions between MASELCO and DMCI Masbate Power Corporation
(DMPC), which is the supplier of MASELCO’s electricity in the coming weeks
after Masbate Rep. Scott Davies Lanete expressed concern over the power outages
in Masbate following MASELCO’s unsettled obligation with DMPC.
Zamboanga Rep. Celso
Lobregat, vice chairman of the panel, said they will reconvene in two to three
months to assess its progress.
“The problem must be
resolved in a manner beneficial to the energy-consuming public in terms of
providing reliable, reasonably priced, and clean energy,” he said.
Lanete filed House Resolution 1066 urging Congress to look into the power situation in Masbate.
Lanete filed House Resolution 1066 urging Congress to look into the power situation in Masbate.
Under HR 1066, Lanete
noted that in the Final Disconnection Notice issued by DMCI, the power supplier
said that it had “yet to receive any firm commitment from MASELCO on when said
arrears will be settled” despite repeated requests.
As a result, DMCI
disconnected the power supply to the province on May 31, 2017.
