DOE warns against illegal LPG traders

Published By Armando B. Fenequito Jr.

DAVAO CITY – The Department of Energy-Mindanao Field Office (DOE-MFO) has urged the public to report any illegal trader of LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas)-refilled canisters in their area.

Speaking at the “Kapehan sa PIA 11”, DOE-MFO Chief Senior Science Research Specialist Nilo J. Geroche said the agency needs the help the people to stop this illegal trade because of the harm it poses to the public.
“We really need your cooperation for the success of this campaign,” he said.
Geroche said they were able to confiscate about 2,000 LPG-refilled canisters stocked in Barangay Bucana, based on a tip from a local resident.
Geroche said that while he understood that the refilled canisters were cheaper, it will not be economical in the long run since these are putting families and their neighbors in harm’s way.
He also denied that the campaign was anti-poor, stressing they only wanted to ensure the safety of everyone since the material is made of hazardous chemicals.
He said that LPG, being a heavier gas, could easily leak from containers that could be the cause of explosions.
Geroche said that, based on the earlier reports, five huge fire incidents that occurred in the city were caused by the explosion coming from such refilled LPG containers.
Meanwhile, Geroche said their office is looking for a storage area for the confiscated refilled containers here.
He said they are just waiting for the recommendation of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on the place where they will setup their storage area.
