THE NATIONAL GRID Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has sought regulatory approval for its P424.37-million transmission project in Cebu to accommodate the entry of new power capacities.

In a petition published last Sunday, NGCP asked the Energy Regulatory Commission to issue a provisional approval for the Cebu-Lapu-Lapu transmission project.

NGCP said the project involves upgrading of the existing Cebu-Mandaue-Lapu-Lapu 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission corridor, which serves as the bulk power delivery system of Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu substations.

NGCP said new generating plants with capacity totaling 794 megawatts are expected to start serving the Visayas grid by 2019.

It also said simulations showed that even before that -- by 2015 -- the Cebu-Mandaue 138-kV line could be overloaded by more than 33% of rated transmission capacity and the Mandaue-Lapu-Lapu 138-kV line 59%. -- Claire-Ann Marie C. Feliciano   source
