Dumaguete City—The Department of
Energy (DOE) called on local and national government agencies, the academe and
the private sector to adopt energy-efficient concepts and conservation measures
to curb the effects of climate change.
DOE-Visayas Regional Director
Antonio Labios said at an energy forum here recently that 70 percent of the
Visayas region’s electricity production comes from renewable energy, with 40 to
50 percent from geothermal resources.
Labios said renewable energy is a
potent source for power generation in the Visayas. Negros and Leyte provinces
are fortunate to host one of the biggest geothermal plants in the Visayas, he
noted.
Visayas also has wind farms, and 30
percent of the renewable energy in Guimaras and Aklan, Iloilo and Negros Island
coming from solar energy, he added.
In striving to increase public
access to clean and sustainable energy DOE wants to ensure or increase energy
independence and develop more indigenous energy resources, Labios said.
He called on government agencies to
conserve energy at the workplace by using light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs or
other energy-efficient lighting. He also suggested that structures and
buildings be designed to comply with the government’s energy management
program.
The DOE regularly spot checks of
government offices and rates an office on energy efficiency and conservation,
he said. An energy ‘grade’ sticker is then posted at the entrance of the
office.
Among the energy conservation tips
DOE suggests are turning on the air conditioning an hour after opening time and
turning it off an hour before closing time, setting room temperature at 25
degree Celsius, and monitoring and using fluorescent or LED lights.
