MANILA, Philippines — Aboitiz Power
Corp. was tapped by the electricity provider of Surigao del Sur to supply two
megawatts (MW) of clean energy from its hydropower facilities starting 2018.
Surigao del Sur 1 Electric
Cooperative Inc. (SURSECO 1) signed a power supply agreement (PSA) with
AboitizPower subsidiary, Hedcor Bukidnon, for a two-MW electricity supply.
“We take pride in adding
AboitizPower’s Cleanergy to our energy supply mix. Like them, we also believe
in balance. We are confident that by having a reliable partner like
AboitizPower, we will continue to provide efficient electric service to our
member-consumers, and to continue to support economic development in our franchise
areas,” SURSECO 1 general manager Joceler Moralda said.
SURSECO 1 is currently serving 138
barangays from the municipalities of Lingig, Bislig, Tagbina, Barobo, Hinatuan,
Lianga, and San Agustin in the province of Surigao del Sur.
SURSECO 1 is the seventh electric
cooperative to choose Hedcor’s renewable energy in Mindanao.
Hedcor was also the power generator
of choice of Zamboanga del Sur Electric Cooperatives 1 and 2, Zamboanga del
Norte Electric Cooperative, Misamis Occidental I Electric Cooperative, Siargao
Electric Cooperative, and Bukidnon Second Electric Cooperative.
Hedcor currently operates 22 hydro
power plants in the country—five of which are located in Davao City, four in
Davao del Sur, 11 in Benguet, one in Mountain Province, and one in Ilocos
Sur. These power plants produce a combined 185 MW of clean and renewable
hydro power energy.
Hedcor will have a new generating
capacity from its 68.8-MW hydro power facility in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon once
it begins commercial operations in early 2018.
Apart from the Hedcor plants,
AboitizPower continues to ramp up its renewable portfolio with the eight-MW
Maris Canal hydro project in Isabela with partner SN Power.
Currently, AboitizPower and its
partners have a total of 787-MW capacity from hydropower generation facilities,
which make up 62 percent of the total 1,263-MW renewable capacity.
Apart from hydropower projects, the
company also owns the fourth and the seventh largest geothermal power plants in
the world, which are the 448-MW Makban Geothermal Power Plant in Laguna and
Batangas, and the 234-MW Tiwi Geothermal Power Plant in Albay, respectively. In
2016, AboitizPower also launched its first venture into solar power in Negros.
