Luna, La Union — Global
Luzon Energy Development Corporation (GLEDC) is going full steam ahead with the
construction of its P80-billion coal-fired power plant in the 3rd quarter of
2018 at a 41-hectare area across Barangays Carisquis and Nalvo Sur in this
town.
This was revealed by
GLEDC during Friday’s public hearing attended by thousands of residents at the
Municipal Plaza Sports Complex, here.
Lawyer Clarence Jandoc,
representing GLEDC, said that pre-development works of the project had already
started way back in 2015 with various consultations with residents and
stakeholders including research and studies made on the environmental impacts
of the project.
“The construction of
the project will start in the third quarter of 2018 after the Environmental
Compliance Certificate will be issued and it will be completed in the first
quarter of 2021. It will be fully operational in the first quarter of 2022,”
Jandoc said.
Last Wednesday,
residents in the villages covered by the project as well all those in the
adjacent barangays approved of the establishment of the 670-megawatt power
plant at the public hearing conducted by the central and regional offices of
the Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and
Natural Resources (DENR-EMB).
“We, the residents of
Luna have been waiting for so long for progress and development to uplift our
economy and livelihood. This is now the opportunity for us to embrace an
environment-friendly facility that would help us especially the future
generations,” said Vice Mayor Romeo Ressureccion.
Mayor Victor Marvin
Marron also welcomed the support of various sectors in the establishment of the
project because it will help the municipality and its residents.
The project will need
at least 3,000 workers and uplift the local economy to about P500 million in
real property tax alone.
