MANILA, Philippines — Filipino-owned
retail business corporation Emcor Inc. is going green with the installation of
solar rooftops in its stores in Visayas and Mindanao.
These solar installations will
produce Emcor’s own energy requirements.
The company has successfully
installed its 100-kilowatt (kw) capacity solar farm atop the roof of its Agdao
branch, its flagship store in Davao City, as part of cost-efficiency measures.
Despite the system being switched
off on Sundays, when the store is closed, the system is still able to generate
100 kw per hour.
Emcor has applied to become a net
metering customer of Davao Light and Power Co. Inc. at the maximum 100 kw
capacity limit.
Management said the clean energy
produced in its Agdao store addresses half of its energy requirements while
reducing its carbon footprint by up to 100 metric tons a year.
The company hopes to expand its
green initiative and apply the same technologies for its other branches in
Visayas and Mindanao.
For the Agdao branch, Emcor
contracted power solutions provider, LuminAsia Renewables and Green Energy Inc.
to provide turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction services to
install the rooftop photovoltaic system.
LuminAsia chief executive officer
Carlos Garcia said the system was intentionally designed with no battery
storage components since the building’s power requirements are entirely during
sunlight
hours.
“This allows maximum returns since
batteries increase the overall cost and maintenance of the system
significantly. I think it’s crucial to consider because we are in the business
of power savings, not solar energy for its own sake,” he said.
