THE Visayan Electric Co. (Veco) has upgraded its
Banilad, Cebu City Substation for a total cost of P90 million, which adds 33MGA
capacity to the network of the power distribution utility. “It is Veco’s
mission to provide reliable and ample power supply to its customers. We are
committed to advancing business and communities where we are located, which is
why we are constantly improving our facilities to better serve our customers,”
said Veco Chief Operating Officer Anton Mari Perdices. The inauguration of the
upgrading project was held yesterday. Perdices said that the upgraded station,
located in the Veco engineering office in Banilad, Cebu City, adds 33 MVA
capacity to the eastern cluster of the Veco franchise, doubling the capacity of
the facility from 1x33 MVA to 2X33 MVA power transformers, or a total of 66
MVA. In a press conference, Perdices explained that a substation’s equipment
reduces the high voltage of electrical power transmission to that which is
suitable for supply to consumers. “The continued growth in IT Park, Banilad and
A.S. Fortuma areas made it imperative for Veco to also improve the power
facilities that serve the area,” Perdices said. He said the upgrade also makes
it easier for Veco to transfer loads quickly from one substation to another
within the eastern cluster during emergency situations. He said that for a
robust and reliable network, Veco has been keeping up with its N-1 reliability
standard. This means that a single loss of power transformer within each region
would still enable Veco to provide electricity to its customers without
curtailment. It is an automatic link of power supply in times of emergencies to
avoid a power outage. Veco is the second largest electric utility in the
Philippines. It serves the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Talisay and Naga, and the
four municipalities of Metro Cebu, namely, Liloan, Consolacion, Minglanilla and
San Fernando. (EOB) Published in the SunStar Cebu newspaper on April 11, 2018. Latest
