Duterte cites RDC role in addressing power crisis

Wednesday, June 26, 2013
DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said addressing the power crisis in Mindanao was one of the accomplishments of the Regional Development Council (RDC) under her watch.
In her State of the Regional Address (Sora) at the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda)-Davao on Wednesday, Duterte-Carpio said that during her term as chair of RDC-Davao, they facilitated and advocated for the completion of the region's programs and projects, such as the Maramag-Bunawan 230kV Transmission Project and the Sibulan Hydroelectric Power Plant in Davao del Sur.
She said the initiative for the creation of the one-stop shop for renewable energy sources will be helpful to investors who plan to put up mini hydropower plants in the region and in Mindanao.
"Small hydropower plants can also help in increasing the power supply," she Duterte-Caprio said in her Sora.
The RDC-Davao, she said, had started through a feasibility study on the interconnection of power generation in Visayas and Mindanao where the surplus energy generated by power plants in Visayas can enter the grid of Mindanao.
Duterte-Carpio said renewable energy sources were closer to her heart compared to coal-fired power plants because of their negative effect on the health of the residents who live near the areas of operation and to the environment.
"First-world countries had experienced the negative effects of using coal-fired power plants," she said.
RDC-Davao had also reviewed the plans for the 2013 to 2016, like the discussion for approval of the Diwalwal Mineral Reservation Area Development Plan. (CRC)   source
