LISTED AboitizPower Corp. (AboitizPower) is keen in developing potential sites for hydropower plants in the frontier areas identified by the Department of Energy (DOE), said Luis Miguel Aboitiz, the company senior vice president for sales, trade and marketing.
In an interview, the AboitizPower official said his company is keen on infusing fresh capital in a number of hydropower projects.
“We are looking at that 175-megawatt [MW] plant. Though there are others that seem more attractive, however, that is the only one of several we are considering,” he said.
The DOE identified the frontier areas that include 33.8-MW Amburayan River prospect in Benguet; 25-MW Ilaguen prospect in Isabela; 10-MW Quirino prospect in Ilocos Sur; 175-MW Binongan prospect in Abra; 46-MW Addalam prospect in Quirino; 10-MW Hubo prospect in Surigao del Sur; 11.3-MW Asiga River prospect in Agusan del Norte; 17.5-MW Cateel E prospect in Davao del Norte; 30.6-MW Tran AC River prospect in Maguindanao; Lake Mainit River prospect in Agusan del Norte. The DOE said these proposed sites are considered frontier area because of the limited technical data or information.
Under present regulations, the DOE said renewable energy projects that are considered as such need not be bid out under public contracting rounds. Proponents instead endorse their proposals to the DOE for approval.
