MANILA, Philippines - Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) expects to complete 12 more electric capital projects for the remainder of 2010, adding a total of 249 mega-volt amperes (MVA) to its distribution substation capacity, a company official said.
Meralco executive vice-president and networks head Ricardo V. Buencamino said the completion of these projects would further reduce the company’s technical system loss by our six million kilowatt-hours per year.
Buencamino said this would translate to a reduction of around P37.3 million in system loss charges to its customers.
“These projects include three new distribution substations, one subtransmission line upgrading, one subtransmission line reconfiguration and upgrading of seven distribution lines,” he said.
The Meralco official said the new substation facilities will provide the additional capacity needed to accommodate new applications for electric service and likewise normalize six critically loaded power transformer banks.
He said the new NAIA-3 substation located beside the NAIA-3 Terminal in Pasay City is scheduled to be commissioned this November. It is capable of serving the 16 megawatt (MW) ultimate power requirement of NAIA-3 Terminal to go into full operation. It would also provide electric service to the surrounding residential and commercial customers in the Pasay City area.
“For the northern part of Metro Manila, the new Marilao and Veinte Reales distribution substations will be put into operation by December to augment the capacity serving the customers in the areas of Valenzuela City, Marilao, Sta. Maria, Bocaue, Meycauayan City and San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan,” Buencamino said.
The company will also strengthen its electric system backbone by upgrading the Kaybiga-Novaliches subtransmission line and the reconfiguration of the Sta.Mesa and Araneta substations to cut-in a third Araneta-Sta.Mesa subtransmission line.
He said the company is also undergoing rehabilitation of the Taguig substation after being affected by flooding during typhoonOndoy.
This is a major improvement, he said, aimed to prevent prolonged power interruptions in the areas served, including the residential, industrial and commercial customers in Taguig, Pasig, Pateros and Cainta.
Buenacamino said there are six other projects scheduled to be completed before yearend.
These include the upgrading of the odd-voltage distribution system in Pasay City, Binondo, Tondo, Lucena City, Pagbilao and Ternate Cavite.
The Meralco executive said these projects will not only address the critical loading conditions of the existing distribution facilities but will provide switching flexibility during line troubles or maintenance.
Last October 15, Meralco commissioned the new FBGC-4 substation at Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. Also, the subtransmission power supply backbone in the upland Cavite province was strengthened through the commissioning of Amadeo-Tagaytay West–Silang-Dasmarinas 115kV line last October 26.
“All in all, Meralco is investing approximately P7 billion for all service improvement projects in 2010. With these electric capital projects, Meralco affirms its commitment to continually improve the service it provides to its customers,” he said.
