New projects to boost distribution capacity
MANILA, Philippines—Manila Electric Co., the country’s biggest power distributor is poised to further boost its system capability, as it plans to complete by the end of the year 12 electric capital- or service-improvement projects worth some P7 billion.
According to Meralco, these projects will not only add a total of 249 megavolt amperes (MVA) to the company’s distribution substation capacity, but will also cut the utility’s technical system loss by as much as 6 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year. This is equivalent to an estimated P37.3-million reduction in system loss charges to its customers.
Meralco executive vice president Ricardo V. Buencamino disclosed that among the projects to be included are the construction of three new distribution substations, one sub-transmission line upgrading, one sub-transmission line reconfiguration, and upgrading of seven distribution lines.
“The new substation facilities will provide the additional capacity needed to accommodate new applications for electric service and likewise normalize six critically loaded power transformer banks,” Buencamino explained.
The new Naia-3 substation, located beside the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in Pasay City, is scheduled to be commissioned within the month. It is capable of handling and distributing the 16-megawatt power requirement of the Naia Terminal 3, once it goes into full commercial operations.
The substation will be able to provide electric distribution service to the surrounding residential and commercial customers in Pasay City as well.
For the northern part of Metro Manila, Buencamino said that the new Marilao and Veinte Reales substations will be put into operation by December to augment the Meralco’s distribution capacity. These substations are expected to serve customers living in parts of Valenzuela City and in Marilao, Sta. Maria, Bocaue, Meycauayan City and San Jose Del Monte, all in Bulacan.
Also firming up the company’s electric system backbone would be the upgrading of the Kaybiga-Novaliches subtransmission line and the reconfiguration of the Sta.Mesa and Araneta substations to cut in a third Araneta-Sta.Mesa subtransmission line, Buencamino further said.
Meanwhile, the Taguig substation is still undergoing rehabilitation after being affected by flooding during typhoon Ondoy last year.
According to Buencamino, this was a major improvement project aimed at preventing prolonged power interruptions in the areas it serves, including the residential, industrial and commercial customers in Taguig, Pasig, Pateros and Cainta in Rizal.
Buenacamino added that the six other projects that are also scheduled to be completed before yearend, involve the upgrading of the odd-voltage distribution system in Pasay City; Binondo and Tondo in Manila; Lucena City; Pagbilao; and Ternate, Cavite.
“These projects will not only address the critical loading conditions of the existing distribution facilities but will provide switching flexibility during line troubles or maintenance,” he explained.
Last October 15, Meralco commissioned the new FBGC-4 substation at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. Also, the subtransmission power supply backbone in the upland Cavite province was already strengthened through the commissioning of Amadeo-Tagaytay West-Silang-Dasmarinas 115kV line last October 26.
“With these electric capital projects, Meralco affirms its commitment to continually improve the service it provides to its customers,” Buencamino said.
