Low steam delays geothermal work

Sunstar Bacolod
INADEQUATE steam extraction continues to delay the completion of the company’s Northern Negros Geothermal Power Field (NNGPF) at the buffer zone of Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park, a power firm official said.
Retired general Raymundo Jarque, security manager of the Energy Development Corporation (EDC), said EDC wants to get the reaction of the community in Negros about its project.
The company would also like to know the outlook of the province in terms of its power situation, Jarque added.
EDC has invested about P8 billion for the development of the NNGPF, the first renewable power project in the country to operate as a merchant plant under the new electricity environment.
The company remains the country’s largest producer of geothermal energy with an installed capacity of 1,198 megawatts.
In 2005, it accounted for 60 percent of the Philippines’ installed geothermal capacity and contributed approximately 12.4 percent of the country’s installed capacity. (Teresa Ellera-Dulla)
