AN Italian group is looking at developing a portion of the 216-megawatts (MW) of wind, hydroelectric and geothermal power potential in the Oriental Mindoro, Rep. Rodolfo Valencia told reporters.
In an interview, the solon said that Brulli Energia of Italy and its local partner Philippine Hybrid Energy Systems Inc. (Phesi) are looking at developing wind- power projects in Oriental Mindoro.
Valencia, who is a member of the House Committee on Energy, said Oriental Mindoro has a lot of natural resources to explore.
Valencia said the Italian group has already acquired road access, drilling for soil foundation, soil analysis and are also nearing financial closure for the project with Credit Agricole of France.
In 2004, the Department of Energy (DOE) signed precommercial contracts with Phesi for four-wind sites in Marinduque; Baleno, Masbate; Abra de Ilog, Mindoro Oriental; and Tablas, Romblon.
Under the PCC, the proponents have two to five years to conduct studies to assess the wind potential of the areas. The proponents are also expected to submit to the DOE a work program detailing the activities to be done during the exploration period and the corresponding investment requirements.
A United States Department of Energy-National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) study showed that the Philippines has a wind potential of up to 76,000 MW.
A USDOE-NREL study also showed that 47 of 73 provinces in the country have at least 500-MW wind potential and another 25 provinces with at least 1,000 MW.
The World Wide Fund (WWF) also had a similar study that showed that 1,038 wind sites in the country could generate about 7,404 MW of electricity.
The WWF study identified 686 wind-potential sites in 28 provinces in Luzon or equivalent to 4,900 MW. A total of 305 wind sites with a total potential of 2,168 MW can be found in the Visayas. About 47 sites in Mindanao have a potential of generating 336 MW of electricity.
