Mindanao-focused holding firm Alcantara Group is targeting to double its power-generation capacity in the span of three years, as it eyes to supply one-fourth of Mindanao’s peak demand.

The group announced on Tuesday that it is on track to produce an additional 282 megawatts (MW) and raise its total electricity generation capacity to 436 MW by 2016.

According to the Alcantara Group, it is planning to increase its generation capacity for them to meet the growing demand in the southern Philippine island.

Alsons Power Corp., the Alcantara Group’s power project development and power generation management business unit, also said that additional power will more than double its present capacity of 181 MW.

It further said that it will give the company the capacity to supply more than one-fourth of the peak demand in Mindanao, which is projected to reach 1,829 MW by 2016. The additional 282 MW of electricity will come from three projects of the Alcantara Group’s Mindanao subsidiaries.

These projects are: 98 MW this September from the Iligan diesel-fired power plant acquired and undergoing rehabilitation by Mapalad Power Corp.; 105 MW by 2015 from the first phase of the coal-fired plant undergoing construction in Maasim, Sarangani under Sarangani Energy Corp.; and another 105 MW by 2016 from a prospective coal-fired plant in Zamboanga City under San Ramon Power Inc.   source
