THE Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) proposes to build a P1.15-billion substation in the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) Entertainment City to service the needed capacity of large load customers.
The utility firm must initially seek approval from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) before it can proceed with the project, which it hopes to energize by September 2014.
Meralco, in its application filed before the ERC, will need at least 18 months to commission the project. As such, it stressed the need for the regulators to immediately award a provisional authority (PA) for this purpose.
In building the substation, Meralco said locators in the gaming city will be assured of enough capacity to meet their power requirements. “This will serve as a catalyst in the development of the area and a signal for the investors that there will be adequate infrastructure to meet power demands.”
Specifically, Meralco plans to put up a 115-kilovolt (kV) substation with two 83 mega-volt amperes power transformers. “To enable the timely energization of these new investor loads in the Pagcor Entertainment City and the additional power requirements of consumers in the adjacent areas, Meralco proposes the development of the Pagcor-1 substation,” it said.
The utility firm warned that there would be critical loading of existing transformers in the area by 2014 and even overloading by 2015 if no additional capacity is built. “Without the additional capacity to be provided by the proposed project, it will be impossible to accommodate these large load applications in the Pagcor Entertainment City and adjacent areas,” said Meralco.
At present Meralco’s residential, commercial and industrial customers in portions of ParaƱaque and Pasay cities are being served by the 34.5-kV distribution feeders from four substations within the vicinity. source
