The Alcantara Group said Tuesday it is on track to produce an additional 282 megawatts of power and boost total electricity capacity to 436 MW by 2016 to meet the growing demand in Mindanao.
Alsons Power Corp., a unit of the Alcantara Group, said in a statement the additional capacity would more than double its output of 181 MW and give the company the capacity to supply more than one-fourth of the peak demand of 1,829 MW in Mindanao by 2016 as projected by the Energy Department.
Tirso Santillan, Alsons Power chief executive, said the additional 282 MW of electricity would come from three projects of the Alcantara Group’s Mindanao subsidiaries.
Around 98 MW will come from the Iligan diesel-fired power plant acquired and undergoing rehabilitation by Mapalad Power Corp., which is due for completion full commissioning by September; 105 MW by 2015 from the first phase of the coal-fired plant in Maasim, Sarangani by Sarangani Energy Corp.; and another 105 MW by 2016 from a prospective coal-fired plant in Zamboanga City by San Ramon Power Inc.
Alsons Power’s current capacity of 181 MW comes from three operating power facilities. Mapalad Power’s diesel plant in Iligan City already produces 26 MW with the repair of five of its 18 diesel engines; Southern Philippines Power Corp.’s bunker-fired power plant in Alabel, Sarangani has a present generating capacity of 55 MW; and Western Mindanao Power Corp.’s power plant in Zamboanga City has a full capacity of 100 MW.
Sarangani Energy completed the site clearing phase of construction for its first 105-MW coal-fired power plant project in Maasim, Sarangani.   source
