Semirara Mining Corp. intends to strengthen its presence in small power utilities group (SPUG) areas with its plans to put up combined capacity of 75-megawatt (MW) coal power plants in several SPUG provinces.
Isidro Consuji, chief executive officer of Semirara Mining, said that the company is eyeing SPUG areas such as Masbate and Mindoro to put up coal plants. This after the company identified Palawan as the first SPUG area that the company will enter.
“Sasalihan namin lahat ng SPUG, lahat ng off-grid kasi we want to convert from oil to coal so hopefully, we’re just waiting for approval ng Palawan, pag na-approve ’yun then we can go from oil to coal [we will join all SPUG, all the off-grid, because we want to convert from oil to coal. So, we’re just waiting for the approval of SPUG in Palawan. If that is approved, then we can go from oil to coal],” he said.
Consuji explained that as of now, all the SPUG are more focused on oil and only less are focused on coal.
“Siguro kalahati will be coal [Only half of the SPUG is focused in coal]. Masbate, Mindoro and Palawan I think represent 70 percent of SPUG,” he added.
He further said that should the firm’s entry in these areas be pursued, Semirara Mining may put up a 30-MW coal power plant in Palawan, 15 MW in Masbate and 30 MW in Mindoro. According to him, for every 15-MW plant, the country will save around P560 million in subsidies per year. source
