SARANGANI Energy Corp. (SEC) of the
Alsons Power Group has chosen Japan-based global engineering firm JGC
Corp. and its local subsidiary JGC Philippines Inc. to construct the second
unit of its coal plant in Sarangani.
The company said on
Wednesday that it awarded a $280-million e ngineering,
procurement and construction (EPC) contract for Section 2 of the 210-megawatt
(MW) SEC baseload coal-fired power plant in Maasim, Sarangani Province, to the
Yokohama, Japan-based global engineering firm JGC Corp. and its local subsidiary
JGC Philippines Inc.
SEC Section 2 is targeted for
completion in April 2019. It is expected to contribute another 105-MW baseload
power to 3 million residents of South Cotabato, Cagayan de Oro City and other
growing population centers in Mindanao.
SEC Section 1 began operating in
April 2016 providing 105 MW of baseload power to over 3 million residents of
Sarangani Province, General Santos City and other key areas in Mindanao. Once
the 210-MW plant reaches full capacity, the SEC power facility will be able to
provide access to safe, reliable and affordable electricity to more than 6
million people. The $570-million SEC power plant is the single largest
investment in Sarangani Province and the entire Region 12.
