THE Department of
Energy (DOE) may tap people from the academe to conduct a technical audit on
all distribution utilities (DUs) and power-generating firms, the agency’s
spokesman said on Tuesday.
“We may tap a third
party, especially from academe, to conduct the audit. We are exploring all
options so that the process would be faster and credible,” said DOE spokesman
Felix William B. Fuentebella.
Last month, Energy
Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi said his office would pursue the conduct of an audit
to determine if the DUs and power firms are in compliance with existing laws
and regulations.
The audit would also
validate the various reports they submit to the DOE.
The
technical audit teams, added the agency, aim to contribute in acquiring
accurate data for the delivery of quality, reliable, secure and affordable
supply of energy.
Cusi earlier said
competent people within the agency would conduct the audit.
Fuentebella, on
Tuesday, said the DOE is considering all options including, but not limited to,
tapping experts from academe and possibly via public bidding.
“We will look into the
possibility of avoiding bidding so as not to delay the process, but we are
exploring all ideas, including bidding,” he said.
The DOE, he added, has
started preparations for the conduct of an audit.
