Baguio City — Residents
of Abra can sleep soundly as Abra Governor Jocelyn Bernos announced yesterday
that the National Electrification Administration (NEA) assured her that
electricity will not be cut off in the province.
There had been growing
anxiety among the people of Abra after the Wholesale Energy Spot Market (WESM)
issued a notice of disconnection of power effective 12 noon of February 12
(Monday) to the Abra Electric Cooperative (Abreco).
But Bernos said the NEA
has already taken over the management and operation of Abreco, deactivating the
Board of Directors and suspending the general manager.
She said yesterday’s
take-over of Abreco is the best solution at the moment, which is beneficial for
the whole province. “I feel sorry for what happened, but this is a leader’s
decision that has to be done so that the whole province will not encounter a
bigger problem.”
“There are no electric
power providers who want to supply to Abreco anymore and we did not have a
choice but to ask the help of the authority in the industry,” making her seek
help from NEA.
She said the move was
made to avoid a repeat of Abra’s past experience when power was disconnected
for days.
“We give the NEA the
chance to do what they can do anyway they have the expertise and the knowledge
on how to address the problems of Abreco,” Bernos said.
Abreco has been hit by
alleged mismanagement problems over the past years as well as big losses as a
result of typhoons’ destruction of power facilities and these are being
investigated by the Department of Energy (DOE).
Abra Rep. Joseph Bernos
said that a DOE intervention will not be an absolution of Abreco and its
management team from the wrongdoings that piled up through the years.
