MANILA, Philippines — Semirara
Mining and Power Corp. (SMPC), the country’s largest coal producer, has
received International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certification for
quality and environmental management systems.
In a statement, SMPC said it was
certified by the ISO on quality and environmental management systems and OHSAS
occupational health and safety management system by Certification International
Philippines (CIP), an affiliate of British company SOCOTEC Group, the market
leader in certification and business risk management.
SMPC successfully transitioned and
passed conformance to the 2015 versions of ISO 9001 and ISO14001 on quality and
environmental management systems, respectively.
The new versions require an embedded
risk-based approach and take into account the engagement of various key
stakeholders. SMPC was previously certified to 14001:2004 and 9001:2008 for the
past eight years.
Now on its ninth year, SMPC received
a recertification of OHSAS 18001:2007 on occupational health and safety
management system.
“By continuing to align with
international standards and leading practices, we provide quality to our
customers, as well as ensure effective mitigation of the environmental, safety,
health and social impact of our operations to the environment, employees and
communities,” SMPC president and COO Victor Consunji said.
Last year, two of its power
generating companies bagged international certification for adhering to safety
standards.
