Electricity bills to drop as Meralco cuts charges

CUSTOMERS of Manila Electric Co. will enjoy lower generation charges, by P1.10 per kilowatt-hour, due to lower prices of electricity sold by its independent power producers.
Meralco, the country’s biggest power distributor, said generation charges went down to P4.31 per kWh this month from P5.41 per kWh in September.
This meant that consumers with an average consumption of 200 kWh per month will see their bills go down by P220.
The lower generation charge will be reflected in the bills of over 4.5 million Meralco customers this month.
“At P4.31 per kWh, the generation charge this month is the lowest recorded since February this year when the generation charge was at P4.93 per kWh,” Meralco said in a statement.
The utility said that had there been no prior adjustment in the National Power Corporation’s rate, the generation charge would have been higher at P4.65 per kWh, bringing the reduction down to still a substantial 76 centavos per kWh. This is 34 centavos lower than the P1.10 per kWh drop that Meralco customers will experience this month.
Napocor’s rates went up to P1.7390 per kWh in the August billing period from P0.5378 per kWh due to the drastic decrease in its sales.
After a review and disallowing certain costs, the Energy Regulatory Commission allowed Napocor to recover only P0.5832 per kWh.
However, Meralco had already billed some customers of the higher Napocor rate in September.
It would pass on to its customers the lower Napocor charges in the October billing period.
