MANILA, Philippines --- At least 10 persons were reported to have been buried alive while three others were rescued in a landslide that occurred in a coal mining area in one of the islands of Antique Thursday morning.
Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr., Western Visayas regional police director, said coal miners and rescue teams from the government rushed to the area to conduct search-and-rescue (SAR) operations.
“It’s an open pit mining. We received reports that there had been heavy downpour (of rain) in that area in the past days, so we believe the landslide was triggered by that,” said Cruz in a phone interview.
Cruz said the incident occurred at about 1 a.m. Thursday at the mining site of the Semirara Coal and Mining Corporation in Barangay Semirara in Caluya town.
According to Cruz, three workers have already been rescued.
“Two of the rescued victims are already being treated at the Semirara Infirmary Hospital, while the other one was airlifted to Manila for treatment,” said Cruz.
“We are hoping that all of the reported missing will still be rescued alive,” he added. source
