ANTIQUE – Friends, co-workers, and loved ones of Efren Equiza brought his remains to a cemetery beside the beach on a stormy Wednesday in Semirara Island, Antique.
Hundreds turned up for the burial of the miner who perished in a rockslide last Wednesday.
"Nandiyan na eh. Kung ano man ang tulong na ipapaabot ng kumpanya, tatanggapin na lang namin," says Deditha Equiza, mother of Efren.
In a special session by the barangay council earlier in the day, the Semirara Mining Corporation (SMC) vowed to give full support to the families of the dead, missing, and injured.
Administration Officer Juniper Barraquillo claims they have already handed out P1 million to each family.
He says this excludes the money each family will receive from the government and insurance, scholarship for the children, hospitalization and burial assistance, and housing support.
Barraquillo says they also plan to appeal to the Energy Department to allow them to make repairs on the west wall of the Panian Pit where the rockslide occurred.
Water and earth continue to fall from the slopes of the pit, hampering retrieval operations.
SMC, however, vowed to press on with the efforts to retrieve 5 miners who are still missing after the accident. source
