To support the wheeling of generated electricity from the 600-megawatt GNPower coal-fired plant in Mariveles, Bataan, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has announced the completion of its P229-million transmission upgrade project which is linked to the power facility.
The grid operator noted that the project has three components, delving with: building of a new 230-kilovolt transmission line; reconductoring of the existing Limay-Hermosa 230-kV line; and the upgrading of the Limay substation.
It explained that the new transmission line stretching 38 circuit-kilometers from Mariveles to Limay will connect the new power plant to the Luzon grid via the Bataan combined cycle power plant (BCCPP) Station B in Limay. NGCP added the facility has been designed not only to accommodate the grid synchronization of the soon-to-be on stream 600-MW capacity of the GNPower plant; but also its proposed capacity expansion of additional 600MW.
Full commercial operation of the GNPower facility is expected May this year, based on the recent announcement of the Department of Energy. It serves as the biggest supply reinforcement for the Luzon grid in so many years. GNPower has already sounded off to government its plan to build additional 600MW, but this will primarily be anchored on the implementation of the retail competition and open access in the restructured power industry. source
