FIVE miners were killed while five are still missing when the wall in the section they were working collapsed on Wednesday night in Semirara Island in Antique.
Three miners were rescued.
Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr., Western Visayas police commander, said the incident happened at around 11:55 p.m. at the coal mine project of the Semirara Mining Corp. in Barangay Semirara, Caluya town.
The company, which is owned by DMCI Holdings Inc., is the largest producer of sub-bituminous coal in the Philippines.
In a statement, mine resident manager George San Pedro said three miners have been rescued while five more are still trapped in the Patian Pit.
“[The section of the pit] gave way at around 11:55 p.m. [We’ve] suspended operations to ensure the safety of all personnel. The management is in the process of determining the cause of the accident in coordination with relevant government authorities,” San Pedro said.
“We’re extending full support to the families of the affected personnel,” he added. Cruz identified the rescued miners as Marjun Catoto, Adrian Celmar and Lenardo Sojor.
He did not say who of the three was airlifted to Manila for urgent surgery.
Supt. Marloe Marfil, Antique police officer in charge, said rescue operation is ongoing.
“The police can’t enter the pit. Break nila [miners] ng biglang gumuho,” Marfil said.
He said one of missing is a cousin of Caluya Mayor Genevieve Lim. source
