KIDAPAWAN CITY -- A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) went off last Monday at a tower of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) at Sitio Liton, Barangay Kayaga in Kabacan town in North Cotabato.
None among the residents was hurt or injured during the blast as the NGCP tower is located away from the population, said Superintendent Leo Ajero, chief of Kabacan Police Station.
Ajero said the pipe-type IED had a "low order detonation" after some of its parts failed to explode.
The explosion is an isolated case, but the police will probe deeper its investigation, Ajero added.
The police has yet to determine the motive of the extortion.
"We have yet to find out if the NGCP has received extortion threats and if there was, indeed, extortion, we would find out what group is behind it," Ajero said.
Police recovered from the blast site an old model of a mobile phone with a Globe SIM card, four pieces of nine-volt batteries, circuits, and electrical wires.
The Cotabato Provincial Police Office has already deployed additional forces to secure NGCP towers in Kabacan and nearby towns and ensure continuity of power supply to the province. source
