COTABATO CITY (MindaNews/07 May)—With less than a week before the May 13 elections, unidentified men bombed a transmission tower of the National Grid Corp. Of the Philippines (NGCP) in Kabacan, North Cotabato Monday night, police said Tuesday.
Supt. Leo Ajero, Kabacan police chief, said the explosion at around 10 p.m. failed to topple the transmission tower in remote Sitio Liton, Barangay Kayaga.
“The bomb used was maybe a “low order” explosive that caused only slight damage [to the tower],“ Ajero said on the phone
Senior Supt. Danilo Peralta, North Cotabato police director, said bomb experts were still investigating the type of bomb used in the attack.
The attack on the steel tower of NGCP happened as North Cotabato and other parts of Mindanao are experiencing a power supply shortage.
Peralta told Bombo Radyo in Koronadal City that there were previous extortion attempts in the area against NGCP.
But he declined to say if the latest attack was motivated by extortion pending results of the investigation.
Peralta said they are also looking at the possibility the attack on the NGCP tower could be part of attempts to disrupt Monday’s election.
The Philippine Army is helping police investigate the bomb attack, Peralta said. (Ferdinandh Cabrera/MindaNews)  source
