ATLANTIC, Gulf and Pacific Co. (AG&P) will be launching what it called a “virtual” liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipeline to bridge the demand for power in Southeast Asia, the company said on Thursday.
“Our virtual LNG pipeline comprises a network of smaller-scale economical delivery systems including vessels, regasification terminals and smaller power plants,” AG&P President Albert D. Altura said in a speech delivered during the fourth annual Power and Electricity Philippines conference in Pasay City.
He said the customized LNG solutions “accelerate construction, require less upfront investment and offer faster and broader delivery.”
“We are already seeing considerable demand for these products and anticipate this continuing in the next few years,” he added.
AG&P said the Philippines provides a unique challenge for the distribution of energy to 100 million people living on more than 7,000 islands. It said traditional power delivery models were “often too bulky to be viable to meet relatively smaller-scale energy requirements.”
It said small-scale LNG solutions -- which include floating storage, regasification and power -- provide power plants tailored to the archipelago. It said the capacity could be as small as 5 megawatts up to traditionally sized plants.
“There is considerable opportunity for LNG to become a major energy source in the region, particularly for ‘stranded’ markets that are either inaccessible or too small to be feasibly served by the current power supply model,” Mr. Altura said.
AG&P operates from two fabrication and assembly yards spanning around 150 hectares in Batangas. Yard one is among the largest steel fabrication and assembly yards in Southeast Asia. Yard two is capable of operating as a stand-alone facility. -- Victor V. Saulon
