Power firm vows safety, health of residents

April 22, 2016  By Judy Ann N. Dinopol

CEBU CITY — A power firm that has proposed to build a coal-fired power plant in Barangay Sawang Calero here, has assured local residents that it will make sure that their welfare and health, as well as the environment, will be protected while the construction was under way.
Ludo Power Corporation (LPC) said it will create a monitoring team that will constantly monitor the construction of the plant.
LPC said it will work with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Health (DOH) in monitoring the construction of the power plant for possible health and environment issues.
The coal-fired thermal power plant is a project of Ludo Power Corporation (LPC), in response to the problem of power supply in Cebu City.
Residents of Barangay Sawang Calero, where the power plant will be built, and other residents from neighboring barangays in Cebu City had earlier met with officials from Ludo Power Corporation to protest the project.
Environment and health concerns were raised by the residents during the dialogue.
In that dialogue, LPC assured that the power plant will not harm the environment and that the welfare of the people will be its top priority.
In a public hearing on April 20, Nelson Yuvallos, a representative of Ludo Power Corporation, requested the Cebu City Council to conduct a referendum or a signed agreement from the residents, to prove wrong the accusations that they were paying the residents just for them not to oppose the project.
