The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) is currently fleshing out a regulatory framework that shall set differentiated feed-in-tariff (FIT) charges for the various sub-categories of ocean-underpinned energy projects.

During a roundtable discussion hosted by the United Kingdom Trade & Investment unit of the British Embassy in Manila, ERC director Debora Anastacia Layugan indicated that the Commission is studying on how they would approach the FIT-setting system for ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) and other sub-groups of marine energy such as tidal and wave resources.

“The framework today is a technology-specific single FIT,” she said, albeit qualifying that “the ERC is also looking into differentiated FITs as a single FIT may not suffice as an incentive to other sub-technologies.”

The current application for FIT rate lodged by the National Renewable Energy Board (NREB) had been for OTEC at P17.65 per kilowatt hour.

The regulatory body had deferred decision on it though, hence, it is under deliberations until now.
