The Federation of
Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) has proposed
granting of emergency powers to President-elect Rodrigo Duterte for a period of
six months upon his inauguration.
In a letter to incoming
House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, FFCCCII President Angel Ngu said that by
granting President-elect Duterte emergency powers, he would be able to instill
discipline among Filipinos and better address pressing issues.
In particular, Ngu
cited the issue of peace and order. He noted problems of kidnapping, murder,
street crimes (holdup incidents, riding-in-tandem), carnapping, robbery, scam,
and, among others that affect the business sector.
The proliferation of
illegal drugs, he said, corrupts the youth.
The Filipino-Chinese
business group would also like the President-elect to implement measures to
resolve traffic gridlock, which is largely caused by lax implementation of
traffic rules, burgeoning sidewalk vendors, and illegal street parking.
Graft and corruption was
also stressed by the business group as a menace to government.
“By immediately
addressing these problems, the new Administration will be able to set the
policies needed to promote and protect the interest of our citizens,” Ngu said.
FFCCCII is the country’s
largest organization of Filipino-Chinese businesses with a network of 160
member chambers and trade associations all over the country. Since 1954, it has
undertaken various programs and projects to support business growth and social
development.
