First Gen reports ‘fault’ in Unit 20 of Batangas gas facilities

by Lenie Lectura - August 24, 2016

FIRST Gen Corp. on Wednesday reported a “fault” that occurred in Unit 20 of one of its gas plants in Batangas.
“A fault occurred at the main generator transformer of Unit 20 of the 1,000-megawatt [MW] Santa Rita Combined Cycle Power Plant,” the Lopez-led firm said in a disclosure.
The plant is operated by First Gas Power Corp. (FGPC), a subsidiary of First Gen.
Unit 20, one of the four units of the Santa Rita power plant,  is currently under scheduled maintenance outage which started on July 23. Ongoing works, including maintenance activities on the said transformer, will be finished on August 26.
“Investigation is ongoing to confirm the condition of the transformer. If necessary, FGPC can immediately deploy its spare main generator transformer which is stored at the Santa Rita power-plant site,” First Gen said.
The other gas plants of First Gen subsidiaries in Batangas are the 500-MW San Lorenzo of FGP Corp., the new 97-MW Avion open-cycle natural gas-fired power plant of  Prime Meridian Powergen Corp., and the 414-MW San Gabriel combined cycle natural gas plant of First NatGas Power Corp.
Avion and San Gabriel are expected to start commercial operation in the first half and second half of the year, respectively.
The other day, Lopez-led Energy Development Corp. (EDC) reported its 77-MW Malitbog Unit 2 geothermal power plant tripped last week.
The power facility “experienced a flashover inside the high-voltage terminal box,” which caused the said unit to trip on August 17.
EDC said at the time of the incident, Malitbog Unit 2 was offline and in the process of testing and commissioning its Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) under the supervision of ABB, the manufacturer of the AVR, as part of a 30-day scheduled maintenance outage.
“The incident did not have any impact on the grid as Malitbog Unit 2 was not synchronized to the grid at that time, and no injuries were sustained by any of the personnel involved,” the company said.
The Malitbog power plant is part of the Unified Leyte geothermal power plants.
