CEBU CITY – The
Department of Energy (DOE) bared that as of December 2017, it has energized
11,301 households in off-grid areas in the Visayas regions using Solar Home
Systems (SHS).
DOE-Visayas regional
information officer Lourdes Arciaga told the Manila Bulletin that 175
photovoltaic streetlights were also installed in public schools, health
centers, barangay halls, churches, basketball courts and evacuation centers.
Arciaga said DOE
continues to light up households in off-grid areas in the Visayas by using
renewable energy systems (RES) to bolster the Household Electrification Program
(HEP) in the country that began in 2010, was fully implemented in 2017 and is
expected to be completed by 2019.
Arciaga said that HEP
uses mature renewable energy technologies such as photovoltaic solar home
systems (PV SHS), photovoltaic streetlights, biomass power system and
micro-hydropower system.
“As of December 31,
2017, HEP sites are located in 33 municipalities and cities covering 103
barangays all over the Visayas, including Samar, Leyte, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Biliran, Ilioilo, Aklan and Cebu,” she said.
