THE Manila Electric Co. (Meralco)
has submitted the lowest tariff bid that will supply power to the New Clark
City, the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) said.
The Meralco-Marubeni Consortium,
comprised of Meralco and Japan-based firms Marubeni Corp., The Kansai Electric
Power Co. Inc. and Chubu Electric Power Co. Inc., proposed a tariff bid of
P0.6188 per kilowatt-hour. This bested the P0.9888 per kWh bid of the
Aboitiz-Kepco Consortium of the Olongapo Energy Corp. and Kepco Philippines
Holdings Inc.
New Clark City is slated to become
the country’s first smart, green and sustainable metropolis, where firms and
residents will enjoy low utility prices. The BCDA has earlier set the tariff
ceiling for power distribution at P1.25 kWh.
BCDA Senior Vice President and Chief
Finance Officer Nena D. Radoc said the Meralco-Marubeni Consortium would next
undergo post-qualification procedures before the award. The BCDA is eager to
sign the agreement with the winning bidder early next year.
The bid was determined last Tuesday
during the opening of technical and financial proposals at the BCDA Corporate
Center. Present at the opening of bids were representatives from the Asian
Development Bank, the BCDA’s transaction advisor for the project.
New Clark City is envisioned to
possess the first completely smart-power grid in the country.
On the back of state-of-the-art
facilities found in other smart cities across the world, New Clark City is
penciled to have better reliability standards. Locators and residents can
likewise enjoy access to real-time information from utility distributors,
allowing them to manage their consumption more effectively.
The first phase of the New Clark
City’s development includes the construction of the National Government
Administrative Center. The city will host the Southeast Asian Games next year.
